FAQ

1) Are there tryouts for club swimming?
No. Swimmers of all abilities are welcome, even those that don’t have any competitive swimming experience. However, club swimming is not meant to be “swim lessons” for people that do not know how to swim. A general guideline is that you should be able to swim at least 100 yards, or 4 lengths of the pool without stopping.
2) Its been so long since I swam competitively. If I’m really out of swimming shape, will I be able to keep up?
Definitely. The swim club is a relaxed group of swimmers of a wide range of abilities. We have several levels of workouts at each practice.  The main difference between workouts is yardage and intervals, and it is up to you to swim where you feel comfortable.  Feel free to move between lanes!
3) Who runs the practices?
Student officers write and run practices, along with organizing meets, social events and any other swim club-related business!
4) I’m so busy with school work, rush, tenting, and other activities. Do I have to make all of the practices each week? How am I going to have time for club swimming?
It is very easy to fit club swimming into your schedule. While it is recommended that you attend at least 2 practices a week, we only ask that you come to *one practice* each week. If you can’t make it for the whole practice, just stop by for 20-30 minutes and swim the warm up or a set with us. If you’re tenting, Wilson pool is just 5 seconds away!
5) Am I kicked off the team if I miss more than a week of practice?
No. We will always let our members stay with the club. We do not enforce any practice requirement but swimmers who consistently show up to practice get the most benefit from club swimming. Also, please try to show up to practice because the success of the club really depends on your motivation, dependability, and attendance.
6) Do I have to go to the swim meets? What if I’m the kind of swimmer that just likes to swim recreationally and not competitively?
We recommend that swimmers attend at least one meet each semester, however, this is NOT required. That being said, swim meets are a lot of fun, especially when we get a big group together to go. They are usually more focused on social aspects and team bonding rather than swim times and points. Plus, you get the most out of your club dues when you swim. At club swim meets, there are plenty of fast swimmers and slow swimmers. You won’t feel like you’re slower than everyone else!
7) Are there any swim practices on East Campus?
Yes! We are still finalizing the practice schedule for the fall, but there will be one practice a week that is offered at Brodie! We encourage freshmen to come to Taishoff the rest of the week to join the upperclassmen for a practice on West Campus!
8) I was a high school star on the varsity swimming team. Will club swimming be competitive enough for me?
While club swimming will never be as rigorous as a high school varsity swim team, it can still be very competitive. We compete at Nationals every year where swimmers have the chance to qualify for finals in their events -- we have had at least one swimmer qualify for finals for the past two years! We also keep track of Duke Club Swimming records, and have seen numerous get shattered recently, so there are plenty of goals to keep you motivated!
